Based on the General Rules for Surgical and Pathological Studies on Cancer of the Pancreas, proposed in 1980 and revised in 1982 by Japanese Pancreatic Society, relation between the postoperative cumulative survival rate and each factor influencing prognosis were studied on the resected cases with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas. T, Rp and N factors seemed important factors. However, the operative findings of four cases who survived more than 8 postoperative years, suggested the most determining factor was retroperitoneal invasion (Rp). TNM classification for carcinoma of the pancreas was already proposed in 1983, but remains to be evaluated in the future.
