If psychiatrists are to be effective teachers in primary care settings, they must use methods which entail active participation by general practitioners, use a taxonomy which is appropriate to the kinds of psychological illnesses seen by general practitioners, and be aware of the importance of somatic presentations of neurotic illness. Examples are given of three teaching methods using television equipment which promote active participation by the general practitioners.
