Abstract

BACKGROUND

One of the challenges experienced by new graduate nurses during the transition into practice is caring for dying patients. This study aimed to determine new graduate nurses' approaches to death and dying patients and the relationship between death anxiety and death awareness.

METHODS

This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 226 new graduate nurses in Istanbul, Türkiye. A personal and work environment characteristics form, the Approach to Death and Dying Patients Attitude Scale, Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, and Multidimensional Mortality Awareness Measure were used to collect data.

RESULTS

Hardness in communicating with the dying patients (hardness: meaning difficulty) and their relatives and avoiding death and dying patients were considered moderate, with mean scores of 2.64 ± .63 and 2.45 ± .40, out of 4. Death anxiety accounted for approximately 7% of the variance of hardness in communicating with dying patients and their relatives, which is statistically significant. Death awareness statistically significantly explained 9.7% of avoiding death and dying patients.

CONCLUSION

For new graduate nurses, besides simulation-based training on end-of-life care, approaches to sharing their experiences about death and programs to determine a value system related to death may be recommended.

背景

新毕业护士在向临床实践过渡期间面临的挑战之一是护理临终患者。本研究旨在确定新毕业护士对待死亡及临终患者的方式,以及死亡焦虑与死亡意识之间的关系。

方法

本描述性横断面研究在土耳其伊斯坦布尔的226名新毕业护士中进行。使用个人及工作环境特征表、对待死亡及临终患者态度量表、坦普勒死亡焦虑量表和多维死亡意识测量工具收集数据。

结果

与临终患者及其亲属沟通困难(困难:即沟通存在困难)以及回避死亡及临终患者的程度被认为处于中等水平,在4分制中,平均得分分别为2.64±0.63和2.45±0.40。死亡焦虑约占与临终患者及其亲属沟通困难变异的7%,具有统计学意义。死亡意识在统计学上显著解释了回避死亡及临终患者现象的9.7%。

结论

对于新毕业护士,除了开展基于模拟的临终关怀培训外,还可建议他们分享死亡经历的方式以及确定与死亡相关价值体系的项目。
