We present a genome assembly from an individual male (the Western Capercaillie; Chordata; Aves; Galliformes; Phasianidae). The genome sequence is 1,013.2 megabases in length. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 39 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the Z sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 16.68 kilobases in length.
