The mutability induced by dioxidine in E. coli cells has been shown to be stringently dependent on a function of chromosomal umuC+ gene. Suppression of an umuC mutation by plasmids pKM101 or ColIb, restoring the dioxidine induced mutability, proves the possibility of umuC gene functional complementation by the plasmid muc+ genes.
