Abstract

In the antibiotic resistance era, utilizing understudied sources for novel antimicrobials or antivirulence agents can provide new advances against antimicrobial resistant pathogens. In this study, we aimed to investigate antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of (L.) Delile against ATCC 29212, ATCC 25923, ATCC 25922 and ATCC 700603 and several clinical isolates obtained from medical devices, including patient urinary catheters and breast implant infections, with varying antibiotic recalcitrance profiles. The ethanolic and methanolic extracts from rhizome exhibited significant antibacterial activity against and , as well as drug resistant clinical isolates. Furthermore, significant antibiofilm activity was observed against and treated with ER, MR, and MR. extracts also exhibited synergistic antimicrobial activity with ciprofloxacin against sensitizing to a lower ciprofloxacin concentration. Collectively, our data demonstrate the selective antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the extracts of against Gram-positive bacteria and clinical isolates along with potentiation of current antibiotics, which suggests that can be further investigated as a potential source for novel therapeutic options in the treatment of drug resistant bacterial infections.

在抗生素耐药时代,利用研究较少的来源获取新型抗菌剂或抗毒力剂可为对抗耐药病原体带来新进展。在本研究中,我们旨在研究(L.)德利尔对金黄色葡萄球菌ATCC 29212、大肠埃希菌ATCC 25923、肺炎克雷伯菌ATCC 25922和鲍曼不动杆菌ATCC 700603以及从医疗设备(包括患者导尿管和乳房植入物感染)中分离得到的几种具有不同抗生素耐药性特征的临床分离株的抗菌和抗生物膜活性。该植物根茎的乙醇提取物和甲醇提取物对上述菌株以及耐药临床分离株均表现出显著的抗菌活性。此外,观察到对经ER、MR和MR处理的菌株具有显著的抗生物膜活性。提取物还与环丙沙星对金黄色葡萄球菌表现出协同抗菌活性,使该菌对较低浓度的环丙沙星敏感。总体而言,我们的数据表明该植物提取物对革兰氏阳性菌和临床分离株具有选择性抗菌和抗生物膜活性,同时增强了现有抗生素的作用,这表明该植物可作为治疗耐药细菌感染新治疗选择的潜在来源进行进一步研究。
