Abstract

BACKGROUND

Azathioprine is one of the earliest immunosuppressants prescribed for several autoimmune diseases. Yet there is a lack of research on the impact of azathioprine on pulp healing following the pulp capping procedure.

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the effect of azathioprine on the healing ability of mechanically exposed dogs' dental pulps following direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), bio-aggregates (BA), and Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)).

METHODS

Four mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to two groups (two dogs/30 teeth in each group): immunosuppressed (group I) and control (group II). Group I received azathioprine for two months before surgical treatments and until the dogs were euthanized. Fifteen class V buccal cavities were performed in each dog. Each group was randomly divided into three subgroups (10 teeth each) based on the pulp capping substance. The pulps in subgroups A, B, and C were immediately capped with MTA, BA, and Ca(OH), respectively. Inflammation and dentine bridge development were histopathologically evaluated and scored at one and two months. The data were statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

The immunosuppressed group exhibited statistically greater inflammatory cell count and decreased dentine bridge thickness, compared to the control group in all subgroups ( < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Azathioprine has an adverse effect on the healing of exposed dogs' dental pulp following direct pulp capping with MTA, BA, and Ca(OH). Therefore, patients using azathioprine as an immunosuppressive medication may experience delayed healing of mechanically exposed pulps following capping with MTA, BA, or Ca(OH).

目的

本研究旨在探讨巯嘌呤对机械性暴露犬牙髓直接盖髓用三氧化矿物聚合体(MTA)、生物骨料(BA)和氢氧化钙(Ca(OH))治疗后的愈合能力的影响。

方法

将 4 只杂种狗随机分为两组(每组 30 颗牙,每只狗 2 组):免疫抑制组(I 组)和对照组(II 组)。I 组在手术治疗前和直至处死狗前接受巯嘌呤治疗两个月。每只狗的 15 个颊面 V 类洞。根据牙髓盖髓材料,将每组随机分为三个亚组(每组 10 颗牙)。亚组 A、B 和 C 的牙髓分别用 MTA、BA 和 Ca(OH)立即盖髓。在 1 个月和 2 个月时,对炎症和牙本质桥的发展进行组织病理学评估和评分。对数据进行统计学分析。

结果

与对照组相比,在所有亚组中,免疫抑制组的炎症细胞计数均显著增加,牙本质桥厚度均显著减小(<0.05)。

结论

巯嘌呤对 MTA、BA 和 Ca(OH)直接盖髓治疗犬机械性暴露牙髓的愈合有不良影响。因此,使用巯嘌呤作为免疫抑制药物的患者,在用 MTA、BA 或 Ca(OH)盖髓后,机械性暴露的牙髓可能会出现愈合延迟。
