Carbapenem resistance in is primarily due to the acquisition of carbapenemases and is often associated with a diminution of the membrane permeability. The outer membrane protein, OprD, is a well-known route, by which carbapenems, predominantly imipenem, can enter the cell, and its loss has been associated with reduced susceptibility to imipenem. In this study, we investigated the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of isogenic mutants containing various acquired β-lactamases, including carbapenemases, in a porin-depleted background. We identified that the deletion of was associated with some recovery of susceptibility to carbapenems.
