The effect of bathing toad sartorius muscle in hypotonic solutions is studied. The twitch, tetanus force and active stiffness increase as the tonicity decreases from 1.0 R to 0.6 R and then decrease below 0.6 R. Explanation is given in terms of the effect on ATP-ase activity.
