Abstract

Real-time sonograms and IV pyelograms were compared with one another in 34 female patients of 6 to 36 years of age with relapsing urinary tract infections. All scar tissue formations detected by x-ray film were also identified via sonography. In five further cases, sonography showed scar formation three times and one each concrement and a trabeculated bladder that were not seen--or only retrospectively seen--roentgenologically. Other x-ray film findings, such as a dichotomic pelvi-calyceal system, renal duplication, malrotation, concrements, calcified calyceal diverticle, retention of urine leading to obstruction, resection of renal pole and an "empty renal bed", were also confirmed by sonography. The physician who performed and assessed the sonographic examination had been unaware of the x-ray and clinical findings or anamnesis prior to sonography.
