The results of thermoradiotherapy of 48 patients with local extended carcinoma of the rectum are discussed. The tumor was heated four to five times up to 42 to 43,5 degrees C by using electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 915 MHz. Total tumor dose of ionizing radiation made up 40 Gy (TDF = 88). The obtained results were compared with those in control group consisted of 74 patients with local extended carcinoma of the rectum, who underwent only radiation therapy. Basing of clinical and morphological findings the authors evaluated effects of radiation treatment and thermoradiotherapy. The comparison between two methods of preoperative treatment of local extended carcinoma of the rectum resulted in conclusion that thermoradiotherapy is a preferable method as it causes more marked regressive changes in tumor and raises operability.
