Proximal tibial epiphyseal fusion was performed in immature black Labrador retriever dogs using an 8-mm drill followed by a high-speed burr. Epiphysiodesis was complete at 2 weeks in all experimental animals (average growth of 1.5 mm, whereas the unoperated side averaged 5.9 mm of growth). Minimal surgical exposure resulted in less pain in the experimental animals than in those undergoing epiphysiodesis by traditional means. This new technique may be of use in pediatric orthopedic patients.
