The incidence of malignant melanoma within our society is increasing at rates exceeding nearly all other cancers. This increase is associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality, despite the fact that malignant melanoma is curable through surgery if recognized and treated early. Primary care nurses are in a position to be front-line defenders in fighting melanoma through early case finding and client education. Nurse practitioners must be attuned to identifying changes and irregularities in moles which may signal the development of malignant melanoma. Through health promotion they must also educate the public about associated risk factors and preventive measures.
