A unique illness consisting largely of quadriplegia in an 18-year-old woman with neurogenic and psychogenic seizures is described and discussed in detail. The precise nature of the illness remains obscure, although it was predominantly hysterical. The concept of hysteria is reappraised and examined in terms of the mind-brain problem of philosophy.
