Economic implications of running an X-ray department in Switzerland will be illustrated by comparing operating costs of private radiological institutes with and without CT to the operating costs of large radiological departments in hospitals with and without CT and to the operating costs of simple X-ray equipment in general practitioners' offices. These cost calculations form the basis for cost-benefit analyses.
