A novel bacterial strain, designated JQZ6Y-1, was isolated from the leaf of Kandelia candel at Maowei sea Mangrove Nature Reserve, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. The 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogenetic and phylogenomic analysis revealed that strain JQZ6Y-1 formed a stable clade with Paenibacillus wenxiniae DSM 100576 and Paenibacillus hunanensis CGMCC 1.8907 within the genus Paenibacillus. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of strain JQZ6Y-1 with the related species P. wenxiniae DSM 100576 and P. hunanensis CGMCC 1.8907 were 98.3% and 98.2%, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values of strain JQZ6Y-1 with the related species P. wenxiniae DSM 100576 and P. hunanensis CGMCC 1.8907 were 77.5% and 80.4%, respectively. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of strain JQZ6Y-1 with the related species P. wenxiniae DSM 100576 and P. hunanensis CGMCC 1.8907 were 22.9% and 23.0%, respectively. These values clearly indicated that strain JQZ6Y-1 represented a novel species. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain JQZ6Y-1 was meso-diaminopimelic acid, and MK-7 was the predominant menaquinone. The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids, two unidentified phospholipids, and one unidentified lipid. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C and C. Cells of strain JQZ6Y-1 were Gram positive and rod shaped. Optimum growth occurred at pH 7.0, 30 ℃, and with 1-2% (w/v) NaCl. Based on phylogenomic and phylogenetic analyses coupled with phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characterizations, strain JQZ6Y-1 could be classified as a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus kandeliae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JQZ6Y-1 (=CGMCC 1.18974 = JCM 34547).
