Medical and biological illustrators can be aided in drawing small specimens by micrographs from the scanning (SEM) or transmission (TEM) electron microscope. These detailed photographs act as a reference because they show surface detail in exquisite resolution. To help the illustrator understand this tool, a functional explanation of the electron microscope is provided and techniques for application are presented.
