Social media and filtered selfies have reshaped beauty standards, influencing self-perception, and interest in cosmetic procedures. Limited data exist on their psychological impact in Jordanian populations.
To assess the association between filtered selfies, self-confidence, facial satisfaction, and the desire for cosmetic procedures among female university students.
A cross-sectional study of 398 female students at Yarmouk University used a self-administered questionnaire to analyze selfie behaviors, filter usage, and cosmetic interests.
Frequent filter use was reported by 72.3% of participants, with 20.1% considering cosmetic procedures influenced by social media filters. Non-surgical procedures were most preferred (17%). Filter use was significantly associated with reduced satisfaction in natural facial features (p < 0.001) and increased body dissatisfaction. Higher income levels and following social media influencers predicted cosmetic procedure interest.
Filtered selfies negatively impact self-perception and drive cosmetic procedure interest. Promoting body positivity and media literacy can help mitigate these effects. Further research should explore long-term impacts and cultural influences.
