A one-year study of hospitalizations of 12-18 year old adolescents in a general hospital in the East of France showed a rate of hospitalization of 4.3%, lower by 1/2 than that of the general population. More than half of the patients were admitted to surgical wards, one third to wards of internal medicine and, for the girls, 15% to wards of gynecology and obstetrics. One third of the adolescents were admitted to departments of pediatrics. The causes of admission were, in order of frequency, accidents, infections and mental disorders. On the basis of these data, the modalities for reception of adolescents in hospitals are discussed.
