Myelomeningocele is the most common congenital abnormality of the central nervous system and carries significant morbidity. The results of the landmark Management of Myelomeningocele Study, published in 2011, established prenatal surgical repair of the neural tube defect as a viable treatment option. This paper provides an overview of innovations in the treatment of myelomeningocele that have emerged since the Management of Myelomeningocele Study, including the refinement of less-invasive fetoscopic techniques for prenatal myelomeningocele repair and the development of various stem cell therapies.
