Premature birth and hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can stress mothers and impact their self-efficacy post-discharge. This study aimed to assess the effects of tele counseling and an educational pamphlet on the self-efficacy and anxiety of these mothers.
This three-group parallel clinical trial in 2023 involved 135 mothers of premature infants with a gestational age of 32-36 weeks, discharged from the NICU of Fatemieh hospital in Hamadan, Iran. Randomization used performed permuted blocks to assign participants to tele counseling (A), educational pamphlet (B), and control (C) groups. Data were collected through questionnaires on Perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy and Spielberger's anxiety. The tele counseling group received four tele counseling sessions over two weeks. ANCOVA was used for group comparisons. The statistical analyst was blinded to group allocation.
After intervention, while controlling for the effects of confounding variables, there was a significant difference among the three groups in self-efficacy [F(2, 127) = 86.02, p < 0.001; Mean ± Standard deviation for groups A, B, and C were 77.12 (± 1.01), 68.28 (± 1.10), and 57.43 (± 1.07), respectively, with an effect size of 0.57], trait anxiety [F(2,127) = 67.26, p < 0.001; M ± SD for groups A, B, and C were 30.218(± 1.10), 40.36 (± 1.14), and 48.09 (± 1.11), effect size: 0.51], and state anxiety [F(2,127) = 76.46, p < 0.001; M ± SD for groups A, B, and C were 28.16 (± 1.17), 39.89 (± 1.21), and 48.044 (± 1.18), effect size: 0.85].
The use of tele counseling and pamphlet was associated with an improvement in maternal self-efficacy and a reduction in anxiety among mothers of infants discharged from the NICU.
The protocol for this trial has been registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials on 03/12/2023, under the reference number IRCT20221217056842N2.
