Abstract

An acousto-optic frequency shift (AOFS)-assisted optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) for generating broadband microwave frequency combs (MFCs) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. Periodic gain modulation and main frequency oscillation are achieved using AOFS dual-loop and phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings (PS-FBGs), respectively. The AOFS dual-loop is employed to assist in generating the optical carrier-based microwave interferometry (OCMI), thereby expanding the frequency-domain bandwidth of the MFC. Compared to traditional actively mode-locked optoelectronic oscillators (AML-OEOs) with bandwidth of only tens of MHz, the AOFS-assisted OEO can generate MFCs with bandwidth of the multiple GHz range. Moreover, the interference frequency produced by the OCMI is related to the optical path difference (OPD) of the OCMI. Thus, switchable modulation frequency can be achieved by adjusting the length of the OCMI arms. In the experiments, 5 GHz bandwidth MFCs with free spectral ranges (FSRs) of 4.92754 MHz, 3.62319 MHz, 2.75362 MHz, and 1.3913 MHz have been successfully generated.

本文提出并通过实验验证了一种用于产生宽带微波频率梳(MFC)的声光频移(AOFS)辅助光电振荡器(OEO)。分别利用AOFS双环和相移光纤布拉格光栅(PS-FBG)实现周期性增益调制和主频率振荡。AOFS双环用于辅助产生基于光载波的微波干涉测量(OCMI),从而扩展MFC的频域带宽。与带宽仅为几十兆赫兹的传统主动锁模光电振荡器(AML-OEO)相比,AOFS辅助的OEO能够产生带宽在多个吉赫兹范围内的MFC。此外,OCMI产生的干涉频率与OCMI的光程差(OPD)有关。因此,通过调整OCMI臂的长度可以实现可切换的调制频率。在实验中,已成功产生了自由谱范围(FSR)分别为4.92754 MHz、3.62319 MHz、2.75362 MHz和1.3913 MHz的5 GHz带宽MFC。
