The transition of plants from water to land included the evolution from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) growth. In their work, Laura Moody and colleagues identify a new factor that encodes aFLOE-related protein, which is essential for the 2D-to-3D growth transition in the moss Physcomitrium patens.
