Prior research has suggested that depressive symptoms are associated with proactive health behaviors and parent-adolescent communication in adolescents. However, few studies have examined the dynamic interplay among these constructs. This study aimed to explore the complex network relationships among adolescents' proactive health behaviors, parent-adolescent communication, and depressive symptoms.
Our study was conducted within a framework of network analysis. A total of 6190 adolescents aged 10-15 years completed the 8-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD), the Proactive Health Behaviors Scale, and the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS). R 4.3.3 software was used to estimate the network structure and calculate strength, expected influence, bridge strength, and the stability of the network.
The network indicated a close interconnection among adolescents' proactive health behaviors, parent-adolescent communication, and depressive symptoms. "I felt depressed" and "Health responsibility" were the most central nodes. "Health responsibility" had the highest strength and expected influence values. "Open communication" and "Mental health" were the primary bridge node. Females exhibited significantly stronger global connectivity strength compared to males (network strength: 6.35 in male participants; 6.69 in female participants; S = 0.34; p < 0.05).
In this study, I felt depressed and health responsibility were found to be central nodes in the proactive health behaviors, parent-adolescent communication, and depressive symptoms network. The findings highlight the importance of health responsibility and mental health in preventing and alleviating depressive symptoms. Open communication and mental health may be an effective way to reduce depressive symptoms.
