The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of Carica papaya on periodontal disease in the adult population.
A systematic search was performed using the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane library databases up to June 2021 using related keywords for randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of Carica papaya on gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), and papilla bleeding index (PBI) in the intervention group compared to control group.
A total of five eligible studies involving 206 participants were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. GI score significantly decreased in the intervention group at the end of the treatment compared to the baseline (ES = -0.64; 95% CI = -0.85--0.42; I = 90.4%; < 0.001). Furthermore, patients in the intervention group had significantly lower GI (weighted mean difference = -0.28; 95% CI = -0.45--0.10; I = 98.2%; < 0.001) and PI (weighted mean difference = -0.36; 95% CI = -0.59--0.14; I = 99.3; < 0.001) scores compared with control individuals. However, no significant difference observed between the two groups regarding PBI score.
Despite study limitations, this systematic review and meta-analysis highlighted the effective role of oral care products containing Carica papaya for the treatment of periodontal diseases by improving indices like GI and PI.
本系统评价和荟萃分析的目的是研究番木瓜对成年人群牙周疾病的影响。
截至2021年6月,使用PubMed、科学网、Embase和Cochrane图书馆数据库进行系统检索,使用相关关键词查找评估番木瓜对干预组与对照组牙龈指数(GI)、菌斑指数(PI)和龈乳头出血指数(PBI)影响的随机临床试验。
系统评价和荟萃分析共纳入5项符合条件的研究,涉及206名参与者。与基线相比,干预组在治疗结束时GI评分显著降低(效应量=-0.64;95%置信区间=-0.85--0.42;I²=90.4%;P<0.001)。此外,与对照组相比,干预组患者的GI(加权平均差=-0.28;95%置信区间=-0.45--0.10;I²=98.2%;P<0.001)和PI(加权平均差=-0.36;95%置信区间=-0.59--0.14;I²=99.3%;P<0.001)评分显著更低。然而,两组在PBI评分方面未观察到显著差异。
