Transplantation of isolated islets in volunteer patients with functioning renal allografts reduced their insulin requirements for up to 18 months. These trials were based on experiments with rats with induced diabetes in which plasma glucose levels and glucosuria were decreased, and retinal and renal complications prevented or reversed. The approach may make possible correction of the carbohydrate metabolism defect.
