Cell-based reparative medicine and drug discovery utilise the innate sophistication of cells to build supramolecular assemblies. Unfortunately, bereft of their optimal tissue context, during in vitro culture, this ability is compromised. Herein, we argue that macromolecular crowding is the missing link in the development of tissue facsimiles for reparative medicine and drug discovery purposes.
