Abstract

Deposits of bile in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes from six patients with cholestasis were studied by electron microscopy and ultrastructural cytochemistry. The deposits were identified in vacuoles of varying size and complexity. The demonstration of acid phosphatase activity in these vacuoles suggests that lysosomes participate in the elimination of bile deposits retained in hepatocytes.
