The four subclasses of human IgG were labelled either with I or I and injected into rabbit uteri (24 days pregnant) in pairs. Transmission to the foetal circulation was measured 1 day later. It was found that all four sub-classes are transmitted, though IgG1 enters most readily. Whole labelled human IgG fast and slow electrophoretic fractions prepared by DEAE chromatography were also injected and an isoelectrofocusing analysis carried out on the injected IgG and the foetal serum. There was considerable variation of transmission even between adjacent peaks of the IEF pattern.
