Four hundred eighty-eight alcoholics who had been referred by their employers for treatment were included in the study. Data were collected on various aspects of their feelings of job satisfaction when they entered treatment and three, six and 12 months after they had completed the residential phase of treatment and had returned to work. Questions which related to satisfaction with productivity rather than to enjoyment of the work environment and of co-workers had the highest scores (indicating lowest satisfaction) at admission, and showed the greatest change over time. Improvement in job satisfaction over the follow-up year was directly related to positive change in drinking behavior.
