Zinc, cadmium or nickel ion in the presence of optimum Ca and Mg will enhance the activity of guinea-pig complement in immune haemolysis. The range of optimum concentration of Zn is 10–10 M and is influenced by the concentrations of sensitized erythrocytes (5–500 × 10) and guinea-pig complement. Enhancement by Zn is unrelated to potentiation of guinea-pig complement activity by the zinc metalloenzyme, CPAγ. These cations may participate in a late-acting step of one of the pathways proposed for the interaction of guinea-pig complement with immune aggregates; or they may, at 37°, destroy an inhibitor of immune haemolysis.
