The larvae of the toad , the spleen of which has at least 6000 lymphoid cells, are able to mount an immune response against sheep or human red blood cells. The study of the ontogeny of the spleen shows that even if it contains as little as 500–1000 cells, there is always at least one cell able to react with the antigen. The ability to induce a primary response (plaque forming cells and immune rosette forming cells) appears when the number of cells in the spleen reaches 6000–12,000.
