A discussion about (1) the role of values in adolescent development and (2) the various value pathologies found in adolescents in residential treatment was presented. A descriptive study of the transmission and acquisition of three values described how values are not only transmitted by unvarying routines, decrees, traditions, and unspoken codes, but are also conveyed by certain child-care practices. The consistency and quality of these practices were found to be a significant factor for the three values studied.
