Monitoring of the patient's heart rate and rhythm is becoming standard procedure for oral surgeons. Abnormal rhythms can develop suddenly in patients who have no history either of a diseased heart or of other systemic disease. Recognition of different types of abnormalities of the heart and a knowledge of how to handle them may prevent the occurrence of fatal arrhythmias.
