Modern data processing equipment in a new medical school library permitted analysis of borrowing patterns of practicing physicians in an urban community. Only a quarter of the physicians in the community borrowed one or more books or periodicals from the library during a two-year interval and less than 10 percent were frequent users. Health information centers need to devise and test new ways of bringing data to providers of medical care if this pattern of use is widespread.
