Abstract

The sensitivity of rats to the lethal and hepatotoxic effects of chloroform and retrorsine is not altered by feeding low protein or protein-free diets. For retrorsine the lethal effect is not altered by injection of dicophane (DDT) to protein-depleted rats. DDT and phenobarbitone increase the lethal and hepatotoxic effects of chloroform in stock or protein-depleted rats. It seems likely that chloroform requires metabolism to exert its toxic effects, but other factors such as liver fat are also determinants of toxicity.
