Cold exposure was found to increase the size of the rat's heart and the resting heart rate. Following administration of atropine and propranolol, the “intrinsic heart rate” was also elevated. The thyroxine content of the heart was increased on exposure to cold. It is suggested that this evidence of increased heart work and irritability might explain the higher death rate from myocardial infarction in the winter months.
