Patients frequently ask their physicians to advise them about problems that are psychological in origin and would, in fact, be more appropriately treated by a social worker. This article presents a model of cooperation between a family physician and a social worker that enabled the two to provide effective counseling services to adults with psychosomatic symptoms and their families.
