Degenerative disk disease of the lumbar spine: immunological implications.

The evidence for an autoimmune mechanism in degenerative disk disease is derived from the presence of a cellular reaction using both the leukocyte-migration inhibition test as well as the lymphocyte transformation test. The associated inflammatory reaction is the basis of the clinical syndrome and the chronicity of sign and symptoms.
