Synthetic peptides, representing part of the viral proteins, can be used as effective vaccines. Using this approach, it is even possible to raise neutralizing antibodies against domains which are not immunogenic in the native protein. Further research is needed to develop the adequate protein carriers and adjuvants. Anticipation of the antigenic drift of viruses is also essential to ensure the efficacy of vaccines.
