The needs of public policy and the path of ad lib scientific investigation may not coincide, as in the case of the field of neurotoxicology. The decisions of policymakers and the findings of scientists can influence each other, however, as shown by some hypothetical examples. A review of conduction velocity studies in neurotoxicology reveals that there is a dearth of papers directed to public policy issues. Types of studies that may be relevant to policy are proposed.
