[Unsuccessful results of osteosynthesis in subtrochanteric femoral fractures].

Operative treatment of subtrochanteric fractures of the femur was performed in 65 patients in the years 1975 through 1981. This study is an analysis of complications with reference to fracture types and operative techniques. Complications were non-union of fracture with loosening of the plate in 4, delayed union in 4, osteitis in 1 and gliding of nails in 4 cases. Neglecting the importance of continuity of the medial cortex combined with too small plates and wrong operative technique had been the reasons for failure in all cases and could have been avoided.
