[The remission of extensive cancers of the mouth and oropharynx with intra-arterial polychemotherapy with vincristine, methotrexate, bleomycin, cisplatin (VMBP)].

Initial intra-arterial chemotherapy was performed during a therapy course in 21 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx, including chemotherapy, operation, and radiation. A combination of Vincristine, Methotrexate, Bleomycin, and Cisplatin (VMBP) was administered. The aim of this initial therapy was to reduce the tumour mass. 10 patients showed complete clinical remission. In 5 of these no malignant cells could be found on histological examination of the primary site of the tumour.
