This article reviews the many factors that may be involved in the development of abnormal gas exchange following a pulmonary thromboembolic event. Both pulmonary and nonpulmonary factors are examined. In addition, the diagnostic utility of obtaining arterial blood gases, dead space, and expired carbon dioxide will be examined.
