Two from 59 anatomical samples of the upper cervical spine show an osseous fusion of the axis and the third cervical vertebra. Moreover, a non-osseous but very rigid union between the second and the third cervical vertebrae is observed in five cases. Generally the fusions seem to be caused by degenerative processes. For these, a more horizontal or vertical orientation of the articular facets of the vertebral joints is important. The failure of development of the dorsal part of the axis' transverse process promotes degenerative alterations.
59例上颈椎解剖样本中有2例显示枢椎与第三颈椎之间存在骨性融合。此外,在5例中观察到第二和第三颈椎之间存在非骨性但非常坚固的连接。一般来说,这些融合似乎是由退变过程引起的。对于这些退变过程,椎体关节小关节面更水平或垂直的方向很重要。枢椎横突背侧部分发育不良会促进退变改变。
