Aging and infectious diseases: state of the art.

Infectious diseases are major causes for morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. A variety of factors contribute to the elderly person's increased susceptibility to infection. Diagnosis of infections in the old individual is often difficult, and antimicrobial strategies may have to be altered in this patient population. Newer and innovative strategies in management are needed in the field of aging and infections.
