A new analysis, based on the equations of motion, is made of the influence of aerodynamic drag on the trajectory and aerial range achieved by a long jumper. The general result is applied to a particular case, namely the world long jump record obtained by Bob Beamon at the Mexico Olympics in 1968. Calculations are also made of the influence of body height and jumping technique on overall long-jump performance. A comparison is made between the relative importance of aerodynamic and anthropometric aspects of long jump performance.
