Current management of the septic patient with acute renal failure is summarized. Emphasis is given to the assessment of renal functional integrity in these situations as well as the recognition of nonoliguric acute renal failure, which is common in sepsis. Principles of antibiotic prescribing for critically ill patients are reviewed together with pertinent considerations for specific drugs.
