Ingestion of 5 g guar gum (Glucotard) led to complete obstruction of the distal oesophagus in a 63-year-old diabetic. A daily intake of 5 g guar gum t.i.d. with 250 ml of water had been tolerated without problems for half a year. Intake of a sufficient amount of water, as well as an undisturbed oesophageal function, are absolutely essential for the ingestion of guar gum. Since alcohol can influence the process of swelling and the consistency of the bolus, simultaneous intake of alcohol and guar gum should be strictly avoided.
一名63岁的糖尿病患者摄入5克瓜尔胶（Glucotard）后导致远端食管完全梗阻。患者此前每日三次、每次摄入5克瓜尔胶并搭配250毫升水，持续半年均耐受良好。摄入足量的水以及食管功能正常对于瓜尔胶的摄入绝对至关重要。由于酒精会影响膨胀过程和食团的黏稠度，应严格避免同时摄入酒精和瓜尔胶。
