An analysis of the circumstances surrounding the birth of 1,003 children (976 deliveries) born in 1976 in Linzolo , a rural village in the People's Republic of the Congo, led to the identification of certain socio-demographic conditions related to the mothers, the analysis of delivery-related conditions and the establishment of a normal curve for birth weight. This same cohort had been the object of a longitudinal study in 1981 on the causes of mortality before the age of 5 years.
